Holiday Preparation

I enjoy this time of year – so much holiday preparation!

Never ending shopping lists, planning menus, organizing family and always looking to add new family traditions. A few years ago, we found a song sheet with silly Passover songs that have become the opening act for our seder.

But I digress. This week is mostly about the food. Our Passover always has matzah ball soup, homemade mashed potatoes and brisket. And, the meal never ends without my mandel bread (recipe ”borrowed” from a friend).

Are there any foods that you connect to a holiday celebration?

Sweet Potato casserole with a meringue topping. My moms old recipe and my wife now sometimes makes it. Always a holiday favorite.

Brisket SMOTHERED in honors remains a staple here. I make a mean charoses (nuts, apples, sweet kosher wine -- other ingredients remain "secret"). My niece brings a String Bean Casserole reminiscent of grandma's (which I find all the more interestingly since Tara comes from Shelly's side!). These days my prime responsibility involves slicing the meat. Shelly really stepped up over the years taking more and more responsibility--moving into the role of the matriarch (hope that phrase doesn't not get me "killed").
