Jury Duty

Categories
Lifestyle

I received a Juror Qualification Questionnaire in the mail.

I eyed it warily as Jury Duty, even though provided for in the Constitution, is generally regarded unfavorably.

I have been called, but have never served.

I filled it out and will send it back.

My initial reaction is, except possibly for my vintage or being an attorney, I should qualify. We shall see what we shall see...

Can you imagine me beingon a Jury?

I have been on several juries in my life. Only one came to a decision. I never liked the thought of it, but felt good that I did it when done .

I have always known you to weigh both sides of an argument fairly, so I think you will do well.

I was called once. When I arrived, it was clear I was not qualified. The D.A. had been a student of mine. The judge was someone I had campaigned for and the defense attorney clearly did not even give me a shot at claiming impartiality.

I think you would make an excellent juror. And I think you would enjoy it. One more experience to add to your long list.

Go on youtube and watch the jury duty skit by the comedian Sabastian Maniscalco.

I think you would enjoy it and be great besides. I didny realize you had never served and it is an experience to be savored ~ you NEED to serve to see what it's like and to offer your thoughts in deliberations. The process will benefit and I think you will enjoy it.

My mother got "called" several times when I was a teenager. She always got picked and would never talk about the case until the end. At that point she would enter the front door and triumphantly exclaim "We got her off!" - Turns out these were prostitution cases and my mother felt it was a victimless crime. She thought it was unfair to arrest desperate women. They never charged the men.

So go, keep your mouth shut as long as you can, and Do Good for the Under Class!

I've been called several times, in both federal and state court, but no lawyer wants a lawyer on a jury, so I've never served - would love to!

Jury duty is daunting and sometimes an inconvenience but many people find it to be a rewarding and eye-opening experience. So, if you do end up on a jury, embrace the opportunity to make a difference and approach it with an open mind. You never know what insights and perspectives you may bring to the table and how your participation can impact the outcome of a case.

I served once on an illegal possession of arms case which was the best civil experience of my life. I was disqualified on subsequent occasions. In one case I had dated the defendant. Chances are you will be disqualified as overqualified.

They almost never select an attorney for a jury. I had only been called legitimately twice while living in NY and each time was either excused or dismissed. The most recent case seemed pretty cut and dry to me but would have lasted for around two weeks as there was no video of the crime (it was a gun charge and stolen car). I was already prejudiced before I was even called up as the defense attorney clearly exhibited racist tendencies especially when he stated to an ex NYC police officer and tried to gain assent by saying "well don't all cops at some time become guilty of corruption or lying" ? When I heard that nonsensical comment I just shook my head and said this experience will not be mutually rewarding in any sense of the words. I then got excused due to a doctors appointment that would have conflicted with the anticipated 10 day trial which probably could have been decided in less than one day if people just obeyed our laws and didn't run around with unregistered and unlicensed pistols and shoot at police officers.

I used to get out for medical reasons, and the last few times, I've either known one of the attorneys or once, the law firm of the defendant had represented me in a car accident. My grandmother used to love to serve on a jury, I remember from when I was young, Grandma would get dressed up, head held high and excited to participate in the American Justice System. She explained to me, where she was born citizens had no rights, and nothing like what we had here. She loved it.

Called but ever served. An amazing experience though. Unheard of, In one case the judge said these are really bad guys and if you want to be discharged I will discharge you. It also was expected to be an unusually long case. For that I declined ... not having to consider the other possible reason.
ODEY RAVIV

How many new Gothamites will you recruit is the Question??
But, I don't think the lawyers will choose another lawyer who has spunk!
Kelly Welles

Actually, my mistake. He was the plaintiff suing for theft of his office copiers, fax machines and other rental equipment. He was an Attny and also the CEO of his company.
Cayce Crown

I view it like voting, a flawed system and the best we currently have, the more who participate, the better it gets. We need smart, generous, thoughtful people and you definitely qualify.
Dana Charlton

Fred, I wouldn't change the experience of working for you for 48 years, and getting to know you, for anything!
