Two Ears and One Mouth

Categories

The other day, someone was explaining to me the importance of good listening and said – “there is a reason that we have two ears and one mouth.”

That resonated with me.  The art of good listening comes naturally to some but it can also be an acquired skill.

When you are meeting a new client for the first time, if you use your one mouth more than your two ears, you are likely to miss what the client really thinks their problem is.   When you meet a friend you haven’t seen for a while to catch up, are you using those ears or your one mouth?

So with that, what does active listening mean to you and do you have a tip to making it happen? In business, how do you make sure your you “hear” your customer?

OK, now discuss.

When I meet someone for first time I ask them to tell their life story...

I always start a business meeting with "what's new with you" or "how are you doing?" I want them to open up to me, and that puts me in the receiving side of information which should mean listening.

A great mentor of mine used to say that and that's why one should listen twice as much as one speaks. To take it a step further, one learns by listening and repeats what they already know when speaking. Listening is the foundation of what I do. Love this!!

My clients always started by stating the assumed *solution* to their problem. It would often be convoluted and an amalgamation of multiple issues. My job, as I perceived it, was to provide the time and attention to restate their issue. Often a simple solution would rise, enabling me to avoid the hedging and patronizing tome of other consultants. In other words, create the space for the client to realize that my time is theirs.
