A New Pair of Shoes

Tomorrow morning my daughter starts school.  OK, it’s a PhD program so she’s had a first day of school for more years than I will count. But it still feels fresh.

As she was brimming with excitement tonight talking about the start of the program, it took me back to all of those first day of schools for her.

Remember the excitement of new school supplies?  Our PTA always offered the “pre-pack” but my kids were never interested.  They always wanted to touch the pencil case – and oh, the glory of a new marble notebook.

And how about that first day of school outfit?  Lots of planning went into how to put that outfit together.

So tonight, we wandered into the first day of school outfit conversation – and somehow, I agreed to buy my daughter a new pair of shoes.  How did that happen? Of course, I did insist that they were Mary Janes . . .

What do you remember about the first day of school?

My mother insisted we have new Saddle Shoes every year, instead of breaking in the used ones for a cooler look.
They were stiff and it was like wearing corsets on our feet, but we ended up with beautiful arches!

(Main memory: Not knowing how to ask where the toilets were. At one school we had to call them Lavatories, at the next school nobody had ever heard the word, at the next one the word Bathroom meant you wanted to go take a bath, and no school accepted the words "Restroom" or "Toilet".)

Wait, I can't get a new pair of boots every fall if I don't go to school? :)

Oh I loved school supplies! Everything was fresh and new for about 3 days. And yes we had saddle shoes and Mary Janes for fancy.
