A Taste of the Past

This past week my husband and I took a day off during the week. We drove to Brooklyn for lunch. For the past few months he has been craving a roast beef sandwich from Roll N Roaster.  Roll N Roaster is a fast food sandwich shop famous for their roast beef in Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn. My husband grew up eating their roast beef sandwiches.

From the first bite I could tell that the sandwich was special for him. It brought back all of those memories of going there with his friends and family.  I loved watching him enjoy his food and his memories. During lunch he asked me what would invoke the same food memories for me.  My answer was Chicken Delite.

As a kid we would have Chicken Delite every Wednesday night. My Mom did not cook dinner on Wednesday nights because she played Canasta. in the evenings.  I remember the excitement that my brother, sister, and I felt when we saw the Chicken Delite car (yes, it had a chicken on the roof) pull up to our house. It meant we were about to eat some hot, juicy, and crispy chicken. I loved it so much that, when I went to sleep-away camp, my parents would bring a bucket up for lunch on Visiting Day.

The memories of that Chicken Delite bucket makes me smile, just as my husband was smiling today at Roll N Roaster. Which food memories make you smile?

At 9 years old, loved my first Chicken Delight meal. Was our reward for winning Little League championship in Westbury. CD was our team sponsor.

As for the question posed…most miss Great Neck stalwarts that are now gone. Elio’s spinach pizza, 4 ‘n 20 pies (chocolate pudding pie) and Poultry Mart (fried chicken and yes, their fried chicken liver).

Roll N Roaster was and still is a great place that brings back memories. It was our go to place the night before Passover for my dad to take my brother's and I out. Still one of the best flame broiled burgers in my opinion.

OK, seriously, can we please plan an outing to Roll N Roaster? As we discussed at length, I grew up almost walking distance and spent a good amount of time there. And just saying Ro, there was a Chicken Delight right across teh street back in the day.
