Hope and Survival

In the midst of the eerie smoke last week, it was nice to read a story about hope and survival.

Four children — including a baby — who spent over a month alone in the Amazon following a plane crash had been found alive. The siblings, who range in ages from 1 to 13 were found in the Columbian jungle on Friday. They were the only survivors of a May 1 plane crash that left every other passenger, including their mother, Magdalena Mucutuy Valencia, dead.

While the story has its roots in tragedy- the crash and death of the adults- the survival of the children is being celebrated in Columbia. In these times we are living in, a story about an almost miraculous survival was uplifting and brought a much needed smile to my day.

I wonder if one key to their survival was their youth - not because of age but because they didn't know exactly how precarious their situation was. Thought provoking blog.

Amazing story. The children were apparently trained in survival tactics - really inspirational.

A story for the ages. How fascinating that they were trained in survival tactics.

Actually it was a demonstration of how extra stupid killing the indigenous people on all continents has in essence been destroying the evidence built up over eons, of how to live with the land. Remember how children were separated from their parents and forbidden to speak their native tongues, and all the other ways their ties to information about "how to survive in the wilderness", so to speak, was discouraged?

Rita. You touch on a major sadness and a perspective on the action of those that measure others who live close to the earth as "less than." A perspective that pains me as well. There are so many examples and analogies that show this... coming to mind now is the person who said,, "of courses Jesus spoke English."

Shelely. I think is was more their understanding of how to live with the earth. Not trained but living with..

A fantastic story of survival but with the key element that these children had been raised learning how to live with the land.
