Elevator Speech

Categories
Lifestyle

In my (www.gothamnetworking.com) networking world we ask: Who you are, what you do and how can we help you?

It's amazing how fruitful those answers can be, because we believe that "It's better to give than receive, but what goes around comes around."

The object of the exercise is multi faceted.

A basic objective is, in the words of my salesman father, "to get on their level", ie, find common ground from which a relationship can spring.

Also, helping the person is a bonding experience which is mutually beneficial.

In the end the responses amount to an "Elevator Speech", but one last tip, don't go on boringly long because the elevator should only reach the mezzanine :)

I agree about keeping the speech short and consice. You also want to ignight curiosity to provide the next step for a future meeting.

Great advice. Don’t let the elevator get stuck between floors. That’s when others concentrate on how to get off.

I am surprised (or maybe not) by how many people really don't listen to what is being said.

The problem with most elevator speeches is that they are just intros disguised as sales pitches. Networking shouldn’t be about doing business with the people in your group but more about getting introductions to “secondary” relationships who are people we don’t know yet. The best “elevator talks” are the ones that start with why (stories that describe why you do what you do and not what or how (that merely state I’m a “full service” blah blah blah). You only have one chance to make a first impression and telling a memorable story is the best way to accomplish that.

Unless you are wearing a Halloween mask :)

I agree about keeping it short. Once you loose the listener, what's the point?

"Getting to their level," I remember, like it was yesterday, though it was 40 years ago ... a nuclear scientist talking to a 3rd grade class, explaining what he did, ratcheding-down his language until getting to their level, to where they were able (he was able) to participate in the conversation with them. They were his customers for ever.

And hopefully their level is the Mezz. ;-)

For me the elevator metaphor goes to whether you want to get on and explore or skip that door when it gets to your floor.
