The Standard of Care

I had a doctor’s visit today.  All fine, just a regularly scheduled checkup.

I have been using this particular physician for close to twenty years.  Each visit feels like we are catching up with each other.  Before ever talking about anything medical a whole conversation transpires.

What’s new? How has your year been?  How are the kids?  Did your son graduate, what is he doing?  Where is your husband working these days?

I remember years ago that this same physician sent me for tests and he was admittedly looking for some scary things. Waiting for the results felt very much like a tortured eternity.  I know, we’ve all been there.

A few days in, he called with no real reason.  The results weren’t in but he just wanted to check and see how I was doing.

The highest standard of care in my opinion is personal.  Knowing your patient has to be the bedrock for treating that patient.

Isn’t that true in all of our respective career paths? Isn’t that the essence of Gotham and the significance of relationship building?

Just a thought for a Tuesday morning.

[PS: Wishing everyone a sweet Valentine's Day.]

Knowing someone is different from being connected and in any business having a relationship with the people you are connected to is fundamental.
