Referrals are such an important part of networking. Recently, we have been very involved in both receiving and giving referrals. We have learned that referrals can be complicated.
An interesting and complicating aspect of referrals surfaced and it raises questions that should be considered when both giving and receiving referrals.
What do you do when you receive several referrals - some from sources that seem to push for you to choose their recommendation? Sometimes you might feel that your relationship with the referral source may be jeopardized if you do not select their referral.
Recently having to deal with these issues gave me added insight — both as a giver and receiver of referrals.

You have to be honest with the both parties. This should never be a stressful thing. If you can move forward, great. If not, that is the nature of business.

A referral is a good thing; however, it can come back to bite you as the saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished." There are 3 outcomes A. Client has a good experience, calls to thank you so much. B. Client never calls as referree drops the ball or C. client complains about the referral. 2 of the 3 outcomes are unaccaeptable.
