Changing Names

I recently read an interesting article in the New York Times. It concerned Jenifer Lopez’s decision to change her name from Jennifer Lopez to Jennifer Affleck after marrying Ben Affleck. The article discussed, extensively, the financial ramifications her name change could have on her “brand.”  The article asks whether JoLo would still be JoLo if she is Jennifer Affleck?

I wondered if Jennifer Lopez considered all the ramifications The Times discussed when she made her decision or, whether, she  just went with a feeling. I believe that the decision to change a surname is a very personal decision. I changed my last name when I married my first husband because I did not like the last name I had. I changed my surname again when I married my second husband  to cut the tie  between myself  and my first husband.

The decision whether  to change my last name, twice, was my decision alone. I listened to other’s opinions, including my children’s but, in the end, I made the decision.

Have you or your spouse changed your last name?

I know a husband who so disliked his surname that he changed to his wife's!
Daniel Schwartz

Only married once and traditionally kept my last name (which my wife did change to mine as well).
Victoria Drogin

I use Paul’s name socially, and kept my last name professionally as all of my career and brand are attached to it since I’m 23. (Also, it connects me to my kids.) it’s more complicated also because I use my maiden name as my middle name. So “Victoria Roberts Drogin“ or “Victoria Napolitano“. And I always answer to Vic. :)

I have a friend who's husband did that too. Her name is Stacy Liberty and she was born on July 4th. Given that, he felt he had to change his name.
Shelley Simpson

The ability to take a name I liked better than my family name combined with transitions at the time, made changing my name when I got married the first time easy. After the divorce I renamed myself and have kept that name despite being married again. It's my name.
