Two divergent shows by rock icons

Two shows last week. Iconic artists. Both rescheduled from original dates. August 14, 2020 in the case of Rod Stewart. January 14 of this year in the case of Billy Joel. While we’ve seen both, it’d be the first time for each for Marisa who wanted to see each. While many around us at Jones Beach appeared to enjoy attending this performance by the former front man for the Faces, singing along with tunes like Maggie May, Tonight’s the Night, You’re in My Heart, Shelly and I found the sound inconsistent at best and most of Rod’s vocals lacking the dynamism we enjoyed just over four years ago when attending his the Mohegan Sun concert. I’ve yet to compare notes with Jason Greenberg who also stopped by (He sold his Yankees tickets. Despite the outcome that night (all know I prefer the Mets), I think I’d have preferred being at the stadium in the Bronx.). I am sure Rod gave it his all but he just was not as good as his solid band and backup singers. At least Cheap Trick performed up to par that eve. Contrast that to the next night at Madison Square Garden. We found this Billy Joel (pictured upper left with his guest that eve, Olivia Rodrigo) performance not only noteworthy but much better that the show eight years earlier that still made my annual top ten list. Unfortunately (for many New York sports fans), he remains the Garden’s best franchise.

I saw a short video from the Rod show on Facebook live and it was marginal at best. He went through the motions but sounded off. Sad

Good review. I saw Cheap Trick with Kurtis Blow opening up (poor KB got booed off the stage) at pier 84 in 1982. Robin Rick and crew were excellent!

Still, you're out there stepping up to bat. No fault of yours if the ball fails to arrive. Time is the third partner in all relationships
including our favorite vocalists. Thanks for reporting from the front.

I can only surmise Jason does not have the prior experiences I had. The FACES could with a more limited songbook could give MICK and KEITH and the boys a run for the money until the glimmer twins stole WOODY for their band.

Sorry to hear that Rod can’t do it anymore!
Health compromised his voice. But, still has big personality. Kelly’s third partner comment on time is too true.
Billy is one of the unique ones. His voice stays solid.
Corey keep rocking!!!
