Drop-Down News

I walked into a coffee shop last Sunday morning in Alexandria, Virginia. It was about 10:30. There was a Washington Post for common reading on the table. I looked at the front page and realized that I had already read the articles on line.
How I get the news has dramatically changed over the years. Although I am one of the few people I know who still has a paper newspaper delivered, I am becoming increasingly aware that I get more and more news on line.
The latest realization is that I have become the subject - and consumer - of “drop-down” news. In light of constant time pressure, sometimes, indeed more than sometimes, the information in the drop-down is the totality of the information. Some drop-downs motivate a touch of the link taking me to the more-detailed story…
other times, the drop-down suffices. Sometimes, the drop-down must suffice as I resume what was interrupted by the drop-down.
Drop-Down News. A new reality.

News consumption has changed for all.
Not having the physical paper this summer is a unique
experience.

We pick up the Sunday NYT, I read the Metro, Style and Business sections and the magazine. Gayle does the crossword puzzle which she does online during the week. Not sure why we buy it. As for the drop down news, it requires too much fact checking. I check a few sites in the morning and figure anything worth knowing will come my way eventually.

Not looked at a printed newspaper since I last brought my car into the Dealer for service before moving last year. They still have them for viewing in the waiting area. There is so much news available on line, I wouldn't even have time to finger though the paper. I do miss the Sunday editions which I gave up long ago as well.

I still cherish the feeling of the paper copy of the newspaper delivered to my door. It slows me down and makes me more thoughtful in absorbing the news.

And I spend hours moving, filing and saving mounds of paper! But go into withdrawal and FOMO when I think about canceling… Dilemma :/
