Is Cash Still King?

Do you carry cash anymore?

I was heading out to a local farmer’s market yesterday. Luckily, I happened to check my wallet to make sure I had enough money to pay for my expected purchases. Most of the stands I frequent do not accept credit cards or cash cards, only cash. I had no cash in my wallet.  Rather than pay the fee at the cash machine, I asked my husband to give me his cash.

On my way to the farmer’s market, I pondered the last time I needed cash. I could not remember. Most of my purchases are either through credit or debit cards. To pay friends I have finally started using Venmo and Zelle. My kids are even worse they barely, if ever, carry cash. They rely solely on cards or electronic transfers.

How often do you use cash?

I tip in cash and when I go out with others wherever we split a bill involves cash; to I make sure I have a good supply of singles, fives, tens and twenties; nothing larger; my in person deposits often involve a withdrawal to ensure I have a max $# of the aforementioned.

Our farmers' markets allow one to buy tokens by credit card and redeem at the stands. And many of the vendors prefer credit cards now. Last night we went to dinner and paid with cash. The manager had to go to the back to get cash to fill the cash register so they could make change. We will use plastic next time.

Mostly use plastic as its easier and I get points towards air fare. But tipping is preferred in cash by the wait staff. Also, so many places now charge a 3-4% fee to use plastic whish really stinks. So caring some cash makes sense.

Saves fees for vendors and small businesses. Understandable why they’d prefer and happy to support. CCs for online everything.

Even the courts now are charging a 35 fee for using a credit card for filing fees. But on electronic filing we have no choice. Just another fee I have to pass on to my clients

We try to tip in cash too. Especially Uber or Lyft since the App takes a piece of anything you charge. . .
