Remembering

It was my father’s birthday last week. My father died several years ago but his birthday still causes me to take some time to pause and remember.

The first thing I always do on his birthday is to call my brother and sister. We find comfort in talking about my father with one another and exchanging stories and memories.

I also light a candle on my father's birthday. In Judaism, we light a candle for our deceased loved ones on the anniversary of their death, their yahrzeit.  Instead of marking my parents’ deaths, however, I prefer to light the candle on their birthdays. I prefer lighting on their birthdays because I just prefer to honor their birth. My father was raised in a religious home. So, I am unsure as to what my father would think of the way I changed this custom   I like to think that he would approve.

How do you honor or remember your deceased loved ones?

Just memories which constantly crop up.

Remembering in my mind, feeling from my heart
We also light candles at church - remembering our loved ones.
Every day we can celebrate the lives of our loved ones who have passed but they will never be forgotten.
Today I celebrate your dad!

I have no issue with you changing the tradition. I think it makes more sense in some ways. but if you felt bad for your fathers sake, you could also do it for his death anniversary as well. I love the candle burning tradition in any case.

I think of their deaths as a passage away from them having to suffer. I am happy to have had them in my own life, so I celebrate birthdays.
My father's birthday is in a few weeks so I will think about how he liked to have his birthday cake the morning after!

You are so blessed to have wonderful memories to share with your siblings. To me, its the fact of the tradition that matters. Past that it is a personal celebration.
