Apartment Hunting

Some of you may already know (well really, if you’ve spent a minute with me recently I’m sure you know because I’ve been busting with pride).

My son landed a dream job and he is moving halfway to Florida.  That move sent us apartment hunting for his dream first apartment in a city brand new to all of us.

Amongst friends, I’ll age myself.  In the old days, when I looked for apartments we followed listings in newspapers.  Local papers and less than local papers.

We followed the same process when we were house hunting.  A couple of weeks ago I found the notebook I kept while we were house hunting. It was a research treasure trove of useless information.  I had cut each little ad out of the paper, taped it into a page in my notebook and then recorded everything we needed to know, while tracking the progress of any properties we liked.  If I’m not mistaken we looked at 107 properties.  It was a hot market.

This time, however, before ever leaving the house my son had narrowed the choices down to five or six properties.  We had seen photos and virtual tours and made appointments to visit.   With that legwork accomplished, we were able to find, narrow and select Eric’s new apartment within 48 hours – signed lease and all.

Times have changed, this one I think for the better.

Following how Marisa and Jonathan have searched was always interesting. Texting of links and pics to view. So now the "issue" is planning your visitations and Eric's return visits.

Time's have changed. I used to write notes down on MLS print outs and before that, I too cut out the ads in newspapers and took notes. Now its all on Zillow and other electronic sites. I still like to print out and write notes as I walk through a property. I write things down like Red cabinet or noisy backyard as ways to remember that house when seeing multiple properties over a day or two.

Congratulations on passing another milestone. I found my current apartment online when I was living in FL and moving to NYC. We did have to come to the City to sign the lease but it was pretty simple.

Congratulations!!! That is amazing to land his dream job right out of college! Times have changed for the better, I remember printing out directions at the library from MapQuest to go anywhere out of state.

Great news on the job and to find a place that you all like is terrific.

How very exciting! I remember when Eric was a little boy and came to the office with you or Bill for various events. This event is bigger than all of them together! I wish Eic congratulations and the very best, always!
