The Gift of the Magi

Categories

I'm sure you know O'Henry's story of The gift of the Magi wherein a husband-and-wife sacrifice for each other to buy then unusable holiday presents for each other.

The closest that I have come to such a scenario occurred when i was very young on a long ago Christmas Day.

As I remember it these many years later, on Christmas morning Santa brought me a beautiful top which generated electronic sparkles when spun. I was so enthralled by it!  I couldn't take my eyes off of it.

Later in the day we had company and the visiting couple had a little boy of the same age who gave me a present. The problem was we did not have a present for him. Quickly, my mother took me aside and said that we had to give my treasured top to that innocent boy.

To this day I can never forget how disappointed I was, but it had to be done and that was that.

Do you gave a similar childhood memory?

I've heard the story before. Indeed, it stays with you. I had a similar situation where a child - a distant relative - showed up unexpectedly at a Hanukah Party and we were compelled to "share" our gifts.

Fred, your story gave me goose-bumps. My similar story was when I bought a stuffed toy for a friend's newborn and showed it to my mother who at that time had "mid-level" Alzheimer's Disease. "Oh!" she exclaimed, "Is that for me?" "Yes, Mama, I hoped you'd like it!" and she hugged it close.

Reminds me of when my mother threw out all of my crayons. Did you look on ebay for a new top?

I love Don's idea about the top. Check out Etsy.com. Maybe it's there.

I love the sparkles you generate for us all everyday.

Bought my son a new 4WD drive truck to drive to Tahoe today. Its a XMAS present as well as a congratulations for his 4.0 GPA and his completion of this phase of Marine Corps OCS....He holds down 3 part time jobs as well !! Of course Fidelity f%ck#d up as usual and the funds were not deposited on time. I scrambled at the last minute and transitioned to paying by CREDIT CARD. Now my card is maxed out for Christmas. I'm leaving Fidelity...They have gotten too big and the customer service SUCKS ! All this before 9AM. UGH !!!
