Stand Up

Last weekend my granddaughter Maggie graduated magna cum laude in Fine Arts from my alma mater, Syracuse University, and we were there to witness it. We are so proud of that talented, kind young woman!

During the graduation ceremony the speaker asked those who were the first in their family to graduate college to stand.

Without thinking or hesitation, I proudly stood, remembering how very important it was for my mother (pictured), who hadn’t graduated high school, for me to obtain my degree.

I must admit, I was the only one in the non student audience to stand and I drew a number of quizzical or derisive looks, but no matter.

My mom taught me to stand up for what I believe in!

And then there’s Stand And Deliver!

Two things came to mind when you shared the topic at the joint live meeting of GOtham GREEN® and Construction at the Friars midweek:

Jethro Tull devoted an entire LP to that phrase, https://youtu.be/dP3V4ZRpSdM

and this song by Bob Marley, https://youtu.be/X2W3aG8uizA, that demands that one do it.

Another reason to love you - I too am the first in my family to obtain a college degree. For me, an immigrant, it’s one of the very top reasons to be proud to be an American - when I watched my son graduate with a Master’s in Engineering and my daughter halfway through her West Point education, I’m amazed as to how much we can accomplish in a generation.

Wonderful ! Congratulations

That’s awesome. we just had commencement at Mercy College, and a huge percentage of our students are first generation. it is one of my favorite days ever, and I spend time with so many parents who are bursting with pride and joy to see their children accomplish this feat. We sometimes take for granted how meaningful it is. Such a wonderful and huge accomplishment!
