I love hidden gems. I’m referring to those small restaurants that have been in your neighborhood forever and you can always rely on for a good meal.  

 

One of our hidden gems is Bigelow’s. Bigelow’s opened in  1939. It’s a very small seafood restaurant in Rockville Center  I loved going there as a child, to sit at the counter  with my dad, and eat their chowder and fried clams.(my Mom was not a seafood fan).  The soup and fried clams  were always amazing. 

 

As a Mom, I took my own family there and sat at the counter or brought home food.  Even with my kids living away, I still bring home food from Bigelow’s.  It’s our go to place for good seafood..

I love Bigelow's. Best White clam chowder south of MA. Also very good fried shrimp. They have gotten expensive for what it is, but they have never cut on their quality so worth every nickle. They actually change their fryer oil daily, so the food is always tasting great (fresh oil makes all the difference). My Brooklyn hot spot is Roll N Roaster (famous for their roast beef sandwiches), but In my opinion, best flame broiled burger.

The gems of the UWS are the diners. Everyone seems to have their favorite and for us it's Utopia because of the people more than the food. The owner's wife makes the best baclava I have had since leaving Michigan decades ago. And every week at least once you can find us at Joann Trattoria again more because of the friends we have there.

My fave closed due to the length of the COVID impacts; most lament it. We have several places we may order from; our go to Chinese, we learned of via Gotham -- I think in early happy hour discussions. But mood and diet considerations really define what gets patronized and I think atmosphere and the faire and service dictate things more that take out for dine-in. Fortunately many nice places still exist and I enjoy when the places other identify work out.

Fisherman’s Cove on Gooseberry Pt. In Bellingham, WA…my hometown.
My parents took us there often. Cherished memories. Closest I’ve found here are the seafood restore aura that on Center Island and Gosman’s Dock in Montauk. Thanks for sharing!

In San Francisco: Swan Oyster Depot for the Shrimp Louie and Yuet Lee for Mussels in Black Bean Sauce and Salt and Pepper Anything!
But now that everyone knows about it, thanks to Bourdain's loose lips, we can't just sashay in anymore.
In NYC - I think Tibetan Kitchen has closed (3rd Avenue and East 30th) - Nepalese/Himalayan.
