Teachers

The other day a guided meditation asked me to consider the teachers in my life.
As I focused on my breathing, I searched for the single person who stood out in my mind as being nurturing, encouraging and a guide on my journey.
I searched my memory bank and one of my college professors came through clearly. But I couldn’t think of anyone from earlier in my journey.
I wonder whether I never appreciated those special people or whether they ever really existed. Or, at least, never existed as teachers in the sense of that awesome responsibility that I now recognize.
And so, close your eyes and think of the teachers in your life.

Coaches too. The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton!

Several teachers come to mind, from High School to college. There were two or three that definitely influenced what I became and opened my eyes to what could be.

I continue to have amazing teachers, There was one, however, when I was in 10th grade. She turned my life around by dropping a book on my desk. She suggested I might like it. It was the first book I ever read. I loved it and have not stopped reading since. But for Mrs. Rosenbaum, I am not sure I would have even stayed in school past that year.

Thought-provoking. There were and are many. But the jocular Rev. Joe Tom Tate of our family church I will never forget. He filled a room with a presence and his megawatt smile and made everyone feel ten feet tall, including tiny six year old me. Then there was my Eighth Grade science teacher Mr. D'Aoust who, at 102, still swims a mile a day. My drama teacher Sylvia Jackson encouraged me to enter a Vogue writing contest. I became a semi=finalist and my first job offer was from Vogue. Thanks Ben!
