It's Just A Cold

I came down with a cold last week. I knew immediately it was just a cold because my husband had one the week before. And he kindly gave it to me.

But in this era of Covid, congestion and coughing raises health concerns to new levels.  As soon as I started feeling unwell, I began taking in home Covid tests.  I even went to Urgent Care to take a Covid test there as well as a Strep test. I know that I would not have gone to Urgent Care for a Strep Test for what was obviously a cold in the pre-Covid world.

Last Wednesday night I went to the first in person Nassau County Matrimonial Bar Association Dinner in two years. Each time I coughed, I felt I had to say, “I took a Covid test, I just have a cold.”

On Thursday morning I appeared in person in Family Court, Suffolk County. As I was going through the Covid screening before I entered the building, I coughed. I really tried hard not to cough but I could not help myself. I then had to explain to the Court Officers that I had a cold, I had taken a Covid test just that morning, and I had tested negative. Happily, they let me in the building.

As the doctor at Urgent Care said to me, “Sometimes it’s just a cold.” Have you had a cold since March 2020? Was your experience like mine?

I did get a cold earlier this winter. I thought for sure it was Covid. I went to CVS, had a test done that was sent to a lab, A day later. Negative. I then went a month later to my old family Dr. back In NY for a general check up. I had them take blood and do a full test for any antibodies. Negative. So after much stress and self quarantining, I realized all this fuss for a common cold. It is what we all think when getting sick these day. Is it Covid? I miss the old days.

Better safe than sorry. As for me - I can't remember my last cold - it's been over a decade for sure Hope you're better now.
