Quiet

We were staying at a new hotel in Woodstock New York. An escape weekend in the Catskills.

The room was modern, overlooking a brook fed by a waterfall framed nicely in the room’s window.

The television was a challenge. All the streaming channels were available - provided you had an account and remembered your password. For the life of me, I couldn’t find the traditional network stations or regular cable.

I became frustrated trying to navigate the TV. The challenge was, simply, too much.

So I shut off the TV and we decided that the brook would be our background noise for the weekend.

The silence was golden. We left with a renewed appreciation of quiet.

I find when I vacation, I rarely if ever turn the TV on and try to avoid the news as well. The point of the vacation is to escape the regular world, at least for a bit. I am glad you enjoyed the nice view out the window.

We used to stay at a Country Inn in Michigan that had one TV in the common space and it had a cover over it. Seems like your TV situation yielded the same result - more time outdoors or in conversation.

Similar appreciation for realizing that you should stop looking at your phone an hour before bed.

Nothing is more soothing that silence uninterrupted except by a babbling brook or bird calls. My husband and I recently discovered this dividend when we stopped having
regular weekend guests to our summer house because of Covid. For forty years we never knew the delights of silence.
