Sitcoms as Cultural Artifacts

The best Situation Comedies reflect the times and make us think about circumstances and experiences beyond our reality.  A rating of the top 100 SCs in Rolling Stone covered a lot of territory.  TV fans check it out.

The top 5 in descending order are:
All in the Family, I Love Lucy, Seinfeld,
Cheers, and the winner-The Simpsons.

The idea the shows could lead us to feel emotions beyond just the laughs is what makes these 5 the Best of the Best.

I was never a big Cheers fan but see it’s magic for many. I appreciate the cleverness and the bite of the Simpsons, but was not a big watcher.

For me, All in the Family was truly a classic. It confronted the issues of race, religion, and politics with a warm family glow. I Love Lucy brought ridiculousness to a lovely conjugal level. But, the show that I can watch over and over is Seinfeld.
The eccentric characters and the magical weaving of the stories always makes me laugh.

What are your favorite sitcoms and why?

Loved Friends. Also Cosby, Roseanne at the time - wonderful models of humor in families. Schitt’s Creek, new classic. Loved All in the Family, but I watched it young in re-runs and didn’t understand much of it at the time. Also MASH…

Love all the ones you listed Odey.

Frasier still makes me laugh every time. I forgot how funny Friends was until my fiancé put it on in the background during the pandemic, Schitts Creek and of course Curb Your Enthusiasm!

Cheers is a wild watch right now. It was a favorite of mine. Every episode centers around blatant sexual harassment and a chorus of beer-guzzling dogs barking support for their charming Sam who hounds (especially Kirstie Alley) relentlessly and outrageously, scheming to bed her. The fact that this was the most watched show at the time… seeping into the subconscious of growing boys and girls and men and women is truly chilling through today’s lens. I still appreciate for what it was…. But man. It. Is. Wildly socially baaaad. Yikes.

No redeeming social value but very entertaining...have been watching reruns of Entourage. Love those boys from Queens!

Seinfeld., always. Friends is a new Fave. Simpsons, sure…but y’all should try Family Guy if you haven’t. It is fantastic.
