Sopranos Fans-Interested in the Prequel or Hoping for a Sequel?

The Sopranos took the country by Storm in 1999 and left with a giant Question in 2007.

I was hooked and every Sunday was a must watch.  HBO subscriptions went through the roof.  Talking about the episodes on Mondays with co workers, family, and friends became a routine.  Even radio hosts took calls about the previous nights’ escapades and mysteries.

And, now 14 years later, The Many Saints on Newark, premiered in theaters and HBO Max last Friday.  It is a cinematic prequel that examines the Soprano family and their associates in the 60’s and 70’s.  I was looking forward to seeing it, even though, the bar was set very high.  The characters of the original series seemed to be perfectly cast and the stories intertwined aspects of family, crime, and politics in a unique and fresh way.

The prequel hit some of the traditional features of the Sopranos well.  The handling of violence and anger seemed perfect.  The scenes of family interaction and some of the casting decisions were disappointing.  But, it was still a good way to spend an evening.  And, when the familiar theme song “Got Yourself a Gun” came on at the end (sorry for the mini-spoiler), I was singing and clapping along.

Will you watch the Prequel or hope for a Sequel?

Many of my friends were disappointed, but I thought it was phenomenal!

I agree some of the casting could have been better.

Other then that, the story was well told and the attention to detail in the way they referenced the show was on point. 8/10!

Loved the Sopranos even though I never had HBO when the series first aired. I had to catch up years after it was over. I do look forward to catching this prequel.

Never saw The Sopranos because I had absolutely no inclination to know anything about them and still don't. What interests me is the attraction - it's fascinating how people love to know about such people.

Loved watching the Sopranos every Sunday with my family when it was on, and was really looking forward to seeing this movie - mostly I'm sure for nostalgia but also because I've always loved mob movies. Was getting mixed reviews so glad to hear you liked the movie.

Looking forward to seeing this. I was a fan of the show. Before I got HBO (which I had to do after the first season), my husband and I went to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria every Sat and Sun for several weeks--they aired the complete season 1. We got hooked and subscribed to HBO. When I see the movie, think I will feel sad, though, that James Gandolfini is no longer with us. Loved the theme song, so looking forward to hearing it again.

Nice to see the Sopranos fans are looking forward to the "Saints" movie. Like Steve's review and the dip into the memories of watching the show.
Shelley brings up an interesting point. Seems like many people want to know more about the "bad" guys.

We are watching the Sopranos series again. Lots of character development and human drama. I’m finding it fascinating in a whole different way than I did watching it all those years ago in weekly installments. We are looking forward to the movie!
