Best Music Bio Movies - R E S P E C T?

One of the richest genres of film is the musical biopic.  As I researched the topic, I was struck by the volume of writings and lists of the best in this category.  Some of the critics chose Funny Girl, the Fanny Brice story, starring Barbra Streisand as number 1.  Others chose Ray, starring Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles.  Even the classical music “star” Mozart had his biopic, Amadeus, get a vote as the best.

The fascination on the personal lives of musical stars drives the interest to produce these films.  It is surprising to look back and see how many future stars got their big breaks in these films.  Jennifer Lopez, as a twenty six year old, played Selena in 1997.  Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner’s Daughter.  Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon both won Oscars for their performances in Walk the Line.  The Johnny and June Carter story is one of the best.

Billie Holiday is the subject of two films on her life and music.  Both stars were nominated for Oscars. Lady Sings the Blues with Diana Ross and The United States versus Billie Holiday with Andra Day are both heart wrenching.

I am a fan of The Buddy Holly Story starring Gary Busey. He got an Oscar nomination and brought that musical time period to life. Marion Cotillard’s performance, as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, was spectacular and won her an Oscar.  Love and Mercy, starring John Cusack, was a great portrayal of the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson. His musical genius and personal torture came through. The list goes on and on.  One of my favorites is I’m Not There, an unusual look at Bob Dylan’s life and music with 6 stars playing and covering Bob’s music.

The most recent entry into the musical biopic world is Respect starring Jennifer Holiday as Aretha Franklin.  Being a big fan of Aretha and Jennifer had me out to a “real” theater to see and hear it on the big screen. Luckily, my Glen Cove theater has matinees and I saw it with 4 other people.  The musical parts of the film are fantastic.  The filming of the performances are done with artistry.  Jennifer Holiday captures Aretha’s SOUL.  The screenplay could have gone deeper into the tough challenges Aretha faced.  But, if you even like Aretha or Holiday, make sure to see it.

Shelley Simpson

I love the genre and you covered many that I like. What I appreciate is when the actor disappears completely into the role to the point that you forget that it is acting. I'm not sure Streisand could do anyone other than Fanny Brice. I'm waiting for the local theater to have "Respect" at a time other than 7pm during the week.

I guess it would be considered an AUTO-Bio Pic, but Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii (1974) is a breathtakingly beautiful and hypnotic movie for lovers of the band. They play pre Dark Side of the Moon songs at the Pompeii Amphitheatre with no crowd and they show interviews with the band in studio as they are making Dark Side. To see them talking and experimenting at the moment of creation of one of the all time epic rock albums is spine tingling. Highly recommended.

Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison in The Doors back in 1991 was very good for any Doors fan.

This is a very cool post. I am making a list! Like Paul, I loved the Pink Floyd at Pompeii doc. When we went to the Amalfi coast and actually got to visit Pompeii, there is a whole wing of the amphitheater dedicated to Pink Floyd. It is absolutely spine tingling. How did everybody feel about the recent Freddie Mercury/Queen pic?

Will have to to look at Pink Floyd in Pompeii Doc. Sounds good. I thought the Freddie M. movie was good. Rami Malek was very good. The story was a little too wrapped up nicely. But that seems to be a common thread in the genre.

Best Music Doc s will be another "culture vulture" blog down the road.

La Bamba also deserves mention; I lean to Gary Busey as Buddy and I enjoyed the Brian Wilson biopic.

Agreed LaBamba was a strong one. Frankie Lymon movie was memorable, too.
