No Milk or Sugar

Squeeze, Hall and Oates, Jones Beach

Finally (and in honor of this blog, taking my coffee black this morning)!

Got to see a live show featuring one of my most fave bands. We chose an outdoor venue: The Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater. We — my daughter Marisa with me — saw Squeeze opening for Hall and Oates. Marisa said she liked the Squeeze set best. Both bands played relatively short sets; do not think threat of storms factored in as I checked their sets at other similar venues.

When I apologized to my daughter for not taking her to a show where Squeeze headlined and played a much longer set, Marisa reminded me of what I forgot — an unforgettable experience (I’ll blame Covid!): Squeeze at Royal Albert Hall, Tuesday, October 29, 2019. [See my blog “Rock and more rock”]

I enjoyed seeing Squeeze. They always sing and play well. Besides mainstays guitarist/lyricist/singer Chris Difford and lead guitarist/songwriter/vocalist Glenn Tilbrook, Squeezefeatures keyboardist Stephen Lange and drummer Simon Hanson (since 2007,) percussionist/back-up singer Steve Smith (vocalist for house music group Dirty Vegas), pedal/lap steel guitarist Melvin Duffy (who joined them for their 2019 tour) and Owen Biddle (formerly with The Roots) on bass. Hall and Oates held their own and more of the crowd was in their court but I concur with my daughter.

Watch this site for further reviews as we look forward to more shows!

Sounds like a great night. Set lists were indeed great. Jones on a nice night is so good.
Last night's mixed bag on WFUV featured a lot of Paul Cotton and POCO.

Before I get on pandora and listen to "Black Coffee in Bed" I will say that before I moved to NYC where the coffee is always HOT, I drank mine black. And imagine my surprise when I ordered "regular" and ended up with what I discovered meant milk and sugar. I learned and now it's "milk, no shugah."

I linked the live version of "Coffee"in YouTube below and worth the listen. The song evolved alot in their lives performances of it compared to the great studio version that appears on "Sweets from a Stranger" which preceded the band's first "breakup"

Nice to have live music back (at least for now). Shorter sets I believe will be part of the compromise of seeing live these days.

I promoted and produced Squeeze with opening act Toots & The Maytals at SUNY Albany Mayfest in 1982. I’ve gotta say that they’ve had many incarnations including Jools Holland but Tilbrook & Difford still “got it” It was a great, tight 50 minute set and a great opener for H&O; however, after waiting over a year and a half for this concert, the boys could have played fifteen more minutes. Daryl was terrifiic and yet I think something was amiss as per several of his comments early on in the show. Gotta say though the weather was a lot better than the Jimmy Buffet concert the night before that Jason Greenberg and I attended also as the heavens opened 20 minutes after Buffet took the stage.
Corey Bearak

Yeah great weather but I am pretty sure threat of storm affected both sets lengths. Where Squeeze headlined they played almost double.

I just saw Luke Bryan there on Sat...what a great concert. I had forgotten how nice JB is!
