Our Silly Family Thing

I think every family has a silly thing. Ours is re-enacting scenes from musicals. Yes, musicals.

Those musicals range anywhere from Oliver to West Side Story to Les Miserables. But they are all musicals.

Any night after dinner, we might be known to literally break into family song and do a kickline or a box step around the kitchen. When Jaclyn was in India, a lovely local co-worker hosted a Shabbat dinner for her and a few friends. After the prayers over the wine and Indian made challah, they proceeded to re-enact the wedding scene from Fiddler on the Roof, chair dance and all. I guess our silly family thing has crossed continents.

My son did not escape this family fate. Of course, he has the best voice among us, so it is a slightly different experience when Eric participates. One of my new favorite videos was taken by his girlfriend, recording Eric and Bill re-enacting the theme song from the sitcom Two and a Half Men in our kitchen.

I suppose I should end this blog by saying if you are every interested in dinner and a show, you are invited to my house for a barbeque.

Anyone brave enough to share your family silly thing?

One of ours involves talking to each other through the cats. We have very long elaborate conversations taking on their voices. “What’s that, Skittles? Mommy had her coffee be-FORE she fed you breakfast?!” verrry goofy. Lol.

Silliness is a serious business in my family. We have several ways of expressing our goofiness. The most fun is carrying on conversations either in English with accents or in complete gibberish. My youngest grand and I can carry on for quite a while in gibberish much too the amusment of the audience.

I used to answer my son back as if he said something different from what he actually said and keep answering him that way. It would drive him nuts until he broke out laughing. Now he is 14 and after two or three tries he give in.

Love this. Ours is always about word smithing and sharp wit. I always need to sharpen my pencil before returning to the dinner table in Chicagoland
