I recently presented at a program for lawyers all about Networking (thank you Carol Greenwald for the invitation).

As we were preparing for the big day, Carol and I together with our co-presenter, Janet Falk, kicked around a big question – “what do you like most about networking?”

Without surprise, we all had slightly different perspectives in answer to the question. For me, it was actually pretty simple.

Networking to me is about making friends – because from those relationships come great business and great resources. I know that I am supported by the strength of my network and that I am honored to be their reciprocal bedrock support.

So many of the people who I value in business and life came from this experience and exercise we call networking. I suppose this simple revelation is why I highly recommend the process to everyone.

How do you answer the question – what do you like most about networking?

The relationships formed and the advice that can be shared amongst the members. It's nice to have to many different "life lines".

Having contact with people very different - at least externally - from me. Though Gotham could use a boost in the diversity department, there are still sooo many interesting people to get to know. We are all doing our best, with what we have, from where we are. That means EVERYONE on our the whole planet. #workinonit #andtheentireUniverse

At its best a mutual aid and support system to share and develop ideas, better develop one’s self and enhance your self personally and professionally, including helping others (not just one’s self)

Networking is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you'll find!

At the time the question arose I didn't agree with Nancy, but thinking about it, I do. Networking is meeting a wide variety of people I might never otherwise know, some of whom become friends, others resources, others clients.
