Barking

We are at a loss as to understand why Charcoal barks at some passing dogs and not others.  Charcoal

She’s a little dog, but she packs a wallop barking loudly indiscriminately at big dogs and small dogs as they pass.  Though not all dogs!

Yes, she is territorial and she’s watching over us, but I can only imagine what the neighbors think.

Is it the sex of the target dogs or something else?

I will confer with Rosie and will let let you know what she barks about this!

Dogs go by scent and hearing. Not so much on sight. Something in the scent she picks up. Could be the sex of the other dog. Or the scent of the person walking the dog. Possible some dogs she recognizes from the neighborhood and some she does not.

Sophie like all greyhounds, goes weeks between barks, but she always barks at other dogs at the dog run. I don't think it's hostile. I think it's "Let's run! Why did you stop running? Let's run more!"

Ditto the dog never barked - she didn't seem to know how. She was partial to blonds and always approached them. She never approached other dogs and I never inquired as to why. Perhaps I should have and then she would have barked.

She doesn’t bark much when on leash

Let barking dogs Bark! Though not in the apartments on my floor... Charcoal knows who is bark worthy.

Little dogs bark often bark at bigger dogs. And bigger dogs bark at bigger bigger dogs. Dogs bark at dogs that do not look like them. Some dogs howl, like John and George, once or twice a day with no dogs in sight. They also bark at passing people and of course dogs. Bark, Bark, Bark.
I wonder if they are just like us? Hmmm.

George, Joanne exclaims “That’s a great one”!

Charcoal is like us, we get excited to interact with most people but there are a couple that don't warrant that same level of interaction.

Some may say I mailed it in, but to me it’s a slice of life...

I had a female chihuahua who would constantly "mark" territory on our walks. My vet used to call her an Alpha female and laugh. His would say there's no explanation as to why they act as they do.
