Greatness

Is someone truly great if their path includes cheating or aligning themselves with people who do?

This question came up for me this morning when I was thinking about the Super Bowl and Tom Brady. He is often referred to as a G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time). His football acheivements are truly remarkable...6 Super Bowl rings and 10 appearances. No one even comes close let alone the dominance and longevity in a sport that lays waste to some great athletes.

He's been involved with Spygate and DeflateGate. His brand, TB12, Inc. is so carefully constructed as witnessed by his perfectly neutral public statements (never takes a side, not even on issues of race) yet took $960,855 in Paycheck Protection Program funds, while he makes roughly $25 millon/year, in the midst of so many struggling businesses.

Tomorrow the announcers will fawn over him elevating him to godlike status supporting his "underdog" brand and not blaming him for anything that happens.

No doubt he his an incredibly gifted athlete, who's focus and commitment have driven him to where he is now. However, does his or anyone's talent subjugate or denigrate what it means to be truly great?

The Giants and Rex’s Jets certainly found ways to negate him. Certainly give him credit as a field general with ability to make throws.

I did...he is a remarkable athlete that excelled in Belichick's system

Agreed great QB with incredible work ethic. But, his ethical stands leave a lot to be desired.
I am rooting for KC and Mahones.

He is the greatest quarterback to play the game in my opinion. I doubt there will be another player with his longevity and accomplishments. I am Giants fan, so no love for the teams he played/plays on. But I see the talent. What he does outside of the game, I do not judge.

Long-term excellence, Brady over everyone, by far. But for a greater package of greatness and integrity, I'll take Roger Staubach. Brady has been involved in numerous instances of cheating (that we know of), and to NOT take a stance in defense of teammates' peaceful protest against violence against people of color IS to take a stance, and not one to be proud of. Brady and his greatness are analogous to the likes of Pete Rose (you can admire how they go about their business more than you admire them) than true heroes, such as Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente.

Yes, its a definite conundrum. I recognize the talent of Brady, Woody Allen, Charles Lindbergh and I can love them from afar (very, very afar) because that is the whole point. I would not invite any of them over for dinner.
