Put me in coach, I'm ready to

A year ago I found myself blogging about how “my” baseball team messed up things, some not its fault, some self-induced with the selection of a new manager. Perhaps fitting under the prior never ready for prime time owners. Things changed this off-season, perhaps not soon enough, but certainly in satisfying ways for most, if not all, fans of my team which (obvious to most readers) plays at Citifield.

This year some signings – a well-regarded catcher and a talented relief pitcher with a dynamic and welcoming social media presence – and then a major trade that brings a multi-talented shortstop with a commanding presence and consistent top of the rotation starter – bring a real sense of optimism about the new season.

Yes this new ownerconsults” with the fanbase. Yes this team surveys its fans about their comfort levels to return to Citifield. But most of all a level of professionalism throughout the team, not just among its players but all throughout the team starting with ownership and the front office.

Absent any further moves, a potent lineup looks like this (whither DH in the NL):

Lindor SS

McNeil 2B (or LF if there’s a DH)

Alonso 1B/DH

Conforto RF

Smith LF (or 1B if there’s a DH)

Davis 3B

Nimmo CF

McCann C

(and if there’s a DH) Guillorme 2B

And the batting order above looks rather can probably work just as well with the pieces moved around some (I know one tribal member who advocates Nimmo leading off.).

Got this correspondent looking forward to the season. #LGFM

Put me in coach I’m certainly ready.....

I only like one thing about baseball - it so thoroughly "entertains" the best people I know! Batter Up! Let the games begin!

I used to be a great pitcher. My best pitch was "Do you come here often?"

I want Dh in NL. It appears pricing for free agents may be going down.

Corey has Spring Fever. Baseball around the corner, hopefully. Two great teams in NYC!
No song to celebrate today? Or is your title the obvious choice?

The upcoming season is one of the most encouraging in years. I'd go with the other Tribe Member and put Nimmo as lead off! LGM!

Pitchers and Catchers arrive at Spring training in approximately four weeks. That is always the gauge for me that we’ve made it through the worst part of winter.

Correct and since i do not expect a visitation practical this yeatyI am to visit next year.

I have to give credit where credit is due; the trade to get Lindor and Carrasco are great additions for the Mets.

Looking forward with optimism, something that had been missing with the previos owners.

Thank you Corey, and nice to meet you Dominick. Yes, every day and twice on double-header Sundays, Nimmo should be leading off (at least when a righty is pitching). For his career, Nimmo reaches base more often than all his teammates and all (but four) major leaguers. Don't take this the wrong way, because Lindor is a phenomenal all-around player, but he isn't particularly proficient at reaching base (.346 OBP, which 6 Mets surpassed last year), so leading off isn't his best use. Conforto should not be batting cleanup, where he tends to get pull-happy as a "power" hitter; he's at his best using all fields, which is probably why his best numbers have been out of the #2 hole, which is were I'd put him. I believe a team's best all-around hitter should bat third (e.g., Keith Hernandez on loaded '86 Met team), and since I'm already putting Conforto 2, then against righties it's probably McNeil or Dom and against lefties Lindor. 4th Alonso unless he regresses further. 5th/6th whoever's not batting 3rd. PS Against lefties, if Nimmo's not leading off, I'd bat him 9th as a "second leadoff hitter" especially for when righties come in later in the game. PPS If JD reverts back to his '19 hitting, then I would (but they won't) lead him off vs. lefties.
