Getting to Sleep

Categories
Lifestyle

Last week I wrote about the bed I sleep on. This week I just want to follow up on the sleep theme and ask the following, what routines do you recommend to help you get to sleep?

In these Covid times, I find, sometimes, going to sleep to be difficult. The anxiety that we are all experiencing seems, for me, to be worse, sometimes, at night as I’m trying to fall asleep.

I have tried some natural remedies such as Melatonin and HHTP. Some sleep experts have told me that the best way to deal with occasional insomnia is to have a regular sleep routine, such as going to bed the same time every night, turning all screens off a half hour before the lights get turned off etc.

I do not have a sleep routine. Do you? What is it? And any recommendations for dealing with occasional insomnia?

Never get out of bed in middle of night...

Turn off all screens Two Hours before bed. No coffee after 1:00PM in the afternoon. No eating after 7:00 PM (Hard to sleep on full stomach). I love a a shower before bed too. If you must have a TV on, set to low volume, no talk shows with audience as the sound has too many highs and lows, and set timer for 30 minutes.

Make a list of what I need to do the next day - so it’s “captured“ and off my mind. Herbal tea. Deep breathing/meditation for a few minutes. (I actually like TV, and fall asleep to it when it’s really low. Paul sets the timer lol.)

Victoria=love those suggestions, going back to making my lists before shutting down for night.

No screens 45 minutes before I get into bed at pretty much the same time every day. I read something that will not require my brain to work out and then I think of 3-4 things I am grateful for. If I think of something that needs to be addressed, I get up and write it down and go back to bed. I use a white noise machine. And Dan is correct about eating.

Put on a Kenny G or a Yanni record. You will pass out before the first 16 bars.
