Tells

You should read Malcom Gladwell’s Blink wherein he posits that there is such a thing as thinking without thinking. He writes that we possess an innate ability to “Thin Slice” and reach instantaneous conclusions based upon
limited information, ie, at a glance.

Such limited information is called a “Tell”.

For instance, high stakes poker players scan the faces of opponents for a “Tell” as to whether he or she is bluffing.

As an attorney/negotiator I found success in reading opposing counsel and other adversaries.

However, in this Age Of The Mask all “Tell” bets are off.  A smile can no longer be one’s umbrella.

Now we are limited to looking someone in the eye and at their body language, but it’s not the same.

At least when I get home and Charcoal first sees me she instantaneously wags her tail enthusiastically and tells me how she feels!

Some much has changed with people during Covid. Not so much for the animals around us. They seem unaware nor care. Love the reaction of my Snowball when I get home.

Can’t understand why everyone doesn’t like dogs

“Smize!” As Tyra Banks says, smile with your eyes!
We are all learning to see new cues.... thank god for the fur balls to keep us sane.

Good Book! Looking people in the eyes is a good thing. At least now I can imagine that everyone is smiling.

A great post, Fred! I'm happy to say that I'd know by looking at your eyes, but can't say that about people I don't know as well. Rosie wags her tail when she sees me don a mask because it probably means she is going for a walk, I adopted her during the pandemic so she has always known this habit. I love that photo of Charcoal ~ she is so happy to see you coming up the walk!

I actually find it amazing how the brain can take information, check all the boxes on a list and immediately formulate an analysis without us actually being aware of the process. It is almost akin to a computer reading binary code.

A similar theory maintains...trust your gut. As in a phone call. We people-read all the time.

I know I have a tell when I get nervous. I'm not going to say what it is but I actively work to control it in court.
