Milk or classes

A farmer from Bombay recently revealed that when the pandemic forced schools to moveCow their classes online, he had borrowed money from his friends so he could buy a smartphone for his 10-year-old daughter so she could study. However, after a while, his friends wanted him to pay back the money he had borrowed.

To do that, he would have had to sell the smartphone to arrange for the money, but the thought of breaking his daughter's heart forced him to make the difficult decision of selling his cow instead. "I did what I had to - I sold my cow and paid my debts, even though we're dependent on selling cow milk to survive," he said.

Would you?

Adding to Fred's comment .. finding another way. The ability to see beyond the obvious or first options are the markings of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial resourcefulness.

I was startled by the fact that he did this for a daughter; incredulous actually. It's also interesting to realize that a poverty stricken kid in the US has no relationship with cows. I would attempt to used collaboration with neighbors as a way to solve this.

There are still cultures that place a high value on education. Perhaps he is finding another way to earn money other than by selling milk. This could be the beginning of a real success story. As for what I would do, like many, I made choices that others found questionable. When you're around for more than a few decades, that's bound to happen. To quote Sondheim, "the choice may have been mistaken, the choosing was not." I admire the farmer and raise a glass (not milk) to his success.

I admire the farmer and lament a democracy whose social infrastructure has not empowered the farmer to know there is another way. Those of us who think we know better, have forgotten how fortunate we are
to be and think American because we have a system
that promotes possibility thinking and unrivaled social support systems to advance one’s lot. I’d love to know what the farmer’s calculations were. Great share. Thank you. P.S.: I can’t fathom jeopardizing my child’s or my family’s health with starvation.

My daughter has not received her device and the DOE has no idea where it is and when it will come!

Wow!
I would not sell the cow (they need the cow to survive). His daughter is only 10 years old, so he has plenty of time to mend her broken heart!
