Back to School

What a difference a year makes.

I always loved the start of the school year. Even now, as an adult, in early September I find myself buying new notebooks and pens. The beginning of each school year always felt like the first step of a new adventure with all sorts of surprises in store.

Well, part of that is still true. This school year is certainly a new adventure with surprises in store but this time also great trepidation and worry.

Many of us have children heading back to school – from nursery through college and beyond. I do not know a parent that has not struggled with how to make the right decision. Do we send our children to school? Keep them home? Wrap them in a bubble? Of course, given the state of the world right now there just is not enough information to decide. So, we are all forced to make what we hope is the best of awful choices.

I know that teachers are struggling too. Overwhelmingly, the teachers I know are committed professionals who want to teach their students. They are also scared.

So, I just wanted to wish everyone a safe and productive start to a new school year. This will certainly be a year we will all remember.

And then there is home schooling...

It's interesting to watch this process unfold. My grandkids are adapting far easier than their parents who have way too many tough decisions to make with far too little information upon which to base them. In the end, though I suppose everyone will be OK. There will be stories to be told and still school supplies to be enjoyed.

It's interesting to see who among my friends made the decision to go virtual and in class. My two daughters, who are NYC teachers, had no choice. They're in their classrooms today teaching virtually for two weeks and then their students come. I think they are looking forward to seeing their students.

It is important for the schools to remain open for many reasons. From childcare needs with working parents, to the quality of home on line schooling which I can attest, is not the same. My son when given the choice, will watch videos on his laptop and not do the lesson on screen. But we are concerned with the hybrid schedule. My wife, as a teachers aid for Autistic kids in BOCES is concerned over her health with kids that have no understanding of distancing or spreading of fluids. She is scared. Crazy times indeed.

It is crazy. I am back in my classrooms tomorrow like Rona’s girls. First week virtual - Students coming next week. We will see how it goes. I’m looking forward to seeing my students but definitely nervous about the technology and protocol. I have to split my classes into 2 sections and half will be in the classroom to maintain social distancing, and half will be on line. They switch every other week. O.o it’s gonna be crazy!

It's so hard. And your daughters are doing great work. Being a teacher right now has such increased expectations adn obligations.
