When Was The Last Time?

You walked into a bank – even pre-COVID.

When I was probably 7 or 8 years old my parents took me to the local Citibank and we opened my first savings account. I remember the passbook. I probably still have it somewhere. I deposited birthday gifts, babysitting earnings, first paychecks (I always learned to save half) and more. I watched the entries in that passbook grow. I had that same account when I worked my first summer job as a law student and then again when I went to work for that same firm after graduating law school. I always felt as if I had learned something important through that passbook experience about how to manage financial affairs.

Fast forward – a passbook does not exist anymore. I do not remember the last time I stepped inside a bank. Mobile deposit changed my world and of course, the ability to electronically transfer between accounts was a similar game changer.

I am not judging the change – just noting it.

My first Savings account was at the Lincoln Bank in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. That bank was sold off a couple of times over the years. When I closed it out as a young adult, I opened an account at Citibank which offered a $500 credit card line to graduating seniors when I as at Baruch College. I still have that account to this day (among several others) and their investment in me was a good move. I visit branches about once a month. Citi still offers free Notary service if you need it, a nice perk on occasion.

My first account was at the American Savings and Loan in Detroit. I started it with $17 which was huge back then! It was entered in the passbook in ink and subsequent deposits were as well - some blue, some red, and some black. I assume it depended on the mood of the teller or what she had close at hand. I go to the bank twice a week to get cash. Yes, I still carry cash for purchasing at the Farmers' Market and at the Diner when we do takeaway.

I went to the bank yesterday. A guy walked in WITHOUT a mask and everyone stuck their hands in the air and hit the floor.

I recently found old passbooks, and I still do go to the ATM and drive through for commercial deposits.
