WAS IT WORTH IT

So it's  summer time during COvid. Where do you take your grandaughter and her parents? Can't go on a cruise. Won't go on an airplane. Won't go to a hotel or eat in restaurants. So we decided to rent a motorhome and go to a campground. Since we owned motorhomes years ago I was pretty familiar with the operation and driving.

i found a rental company in Pennsylavania and a campground about 2 hours away  so that we could stay in one place for the week.

We picked up the vehicle Sunday morning. it was 35' long. Equipped with 2 bathrooms, 3 tvs, convertible sofa and dinette and a bedroom with a queensize bed.

Mara and I loaded the storage compartments, with clothes, food drinks etc. and stocked the refrigerator and freezer. The vehicle had no GPS and I was not concerned except when I started to go and turned on Waze my IPhone said "no network connection"  I later realized that I had turned off cellular data on a cruise we took in January and never turned it back on. Stopping at the first gas station I asked the clerk for a road map and got a look like I was from outer space. As I walked back to the vehicle I noticed that one of the storage compartments opened and we lost a backpack with Mara's Mac charger and Quinn's bicycle helmet.

Mara then tried her phone,it worked and and we were on our way with Waze.

We arrived at the campground where John, Hilary and Quinn met us. As I was making a turn into the campsite I scraped against a tree and ripped the awning. Oh well, we were in a shaded spot anyway.

We had a terrific time. Quinn hit a target at archery and won a Slushie drink. She went fishing and caught two fish. By the way, hotdogs and salami are great bait for lake fishing. Each night we sat around a campfire and as we toasted marshmallows Quinn told "scary stories" which she made up. She has a terrific imagination for an eight year old and a talent for writing

After the third day it was time to empty the black water tank, nicknamed the "Doody Hatch'' by Quinn. As I pulled the release valve the hose lock failed and, you guessed it, I took a "bath" It was a good thing I was wearing a bathing suit.

So, between the RV rental, campsite rental, paying for the broken awning, replacing the helmet and charger, I figure I hold the world record for the most expensive Shlushie and fish. But as you can see in the pictures, it was worth every penny.

Where's the picture of you in the bathing suit at Black Water tank?

More importantly, Quinn has some great memories for a lifetime. Hopefully she won't remember how much it cost you :)

That is the beauty of camping, be it tent, trailer or motor-home. There will ups and downs but most of all, great memories by all. Glad you had a great time. Black tank hose is one reason we never got an RV, but I am, as you know, interested. Just have to get my wife into it. Not sure this post will help my cause though :)

I read something years ago, where a journalist interviewed a number of older, ultra rich people. He asked them, “What would you have done more of with your money?“ Most of them said “I would have created more memories with my family and friends”. Words to the wise.

Thank you for reminding me what vacations with the kids used to be like! What a wonderful memory for you and the family ... stories to be shared forever.

Sounds like a wonderful way to get a family vacation going in these crazy times.
Quinn seems so adorable.
Stories are great but a Norm Campfire without singing some of your favorite Standards!

Love this story! When you teased us at Happy Hour last Friday, this was not the story I was imagining! Quinn looks like she is enjoying the memories made with her family.
