best 4th forward

4th of July, Independence Day, PBS, iPad, Fogerty Family, John Fogerty, A Capital Fourth, CCR, Centerfield, Proud Mary

As the daylight on the 4th ended Shelly noticed the full moon and pointed it out. It still hung low and later it moved me to take a shot as I sat out back watching an array of fireworks, likely less than legal blocks away, sometimes closer in every direction. I do not recall ever seeing such an investment by neighborhood folk in risky activity, no matter how attractive the results appear from the apparent safety of my yard. News reports this year certainly noted an unusual upswing in fireworks; I heard pretty much several times a night for the month preceding the Day of our Independence. At the same time, I liked the PBS special, A Capital Fourth. You know that phrase “timing is everything.” Well, about an hour in when I timely fired up the show on my iPad, I caught the (John) Fogerty Family perform Centerfield and the CCR classic Proud Mary (I watched the rewind of the show to catch John and family on a big screen when I went in; PBS reruns it tonight at 8:00 p.m. on WLIW channel 21.). Just let me conclude how it was a nice day to reflect on the American dream and experiment and hope and wish for the best going forward.

[Editor's note: the plan going into to this week was a blog about rain songs; interesting to see when it occurs, if ever.]

Mitch I hope you are all okay. I have always loved fireworks, however, yesterday, as with everything else at the moment, they stirred many thoughts and feelings for everyone in my house, including my dogs, who needed to be held and comforted throughout the night.

I've never been a fan of fireworks and wonder why this year, with all of the chaos, there was such an overwhelming need to add more disruption. That said, it was a lovely day. The weather allowed for a long walk in the Park. I also wish the best going forward and hope more than ever that the experiment is successful.

I love fireworks and enjoy lighting them off too. Many an illegal display in my old neighborhood in Brooklyn growing up. I got my fair share of burns when a lit fuse went off faster than expected. But it was innocent fun. Never did we light them towards others, the way you have seen recently reported in several neighborhoods, fully covered in the news. I think the major news stories, covering how easy it was to get them at specific locations in PA, interviewing shop owners and all, led to a huge increase this year in home shows. Seems to be the opposite result of what the media covers and the so called "correct" thing to do. Clearly people want them and will go out their way to get them. Add in few legal displays this year, you end out with backyard shows like no other year in recent history.

OMG. Not necessarily got my home but the mass of fireworks In residential community with many wood frame Homes worried me.

This 4th was particularly nostalgic for me... remembering taking the kids to Adventureland in Farmingdale in the ‘80’s and covering their ears but not their eyes... then as empty nesters spending the Fourth at Tanglewood listening to James Taylor, a Berkshire institution...(Our tickets this year were rescheduled for the same weekend in July 2021)!!
I wonder how we’ll be celebrating next year... hopeful with great joy and wonder once again.

Sounds like you had a nice 4th.
Hoping for more togetherness next year.
Thnx for the Fogerty tip.

I watched to listen and view some of my fave music.

It was a crazy fourth!!! I don't remember the last time I saw so many fireworks-and of almost professional grade-going off in my neighborhood.

I do not want to say it was surreal. It was almost like someone cannot go on a vacation so they blow up the cash instead. That just shows stupidity in judgement.
