Hunker Not Hoard

Categories

No doubt, we are experiencing trying and unprecedented times.

We are advised to hunker down and self quarantine to “Flatten The Curve” of the out of control Coronavirus outbreak.

Meanwhile we find empty supermarket shelves as panicked people instinctively hoard.

Gloria Gaynor famously sang “I Will Survive” and we will too.

As I emailed on Fredslist yesterday, one way to do so is to participate in our supportive Tribal Zoom Group meetings or dial in group conference calls.

Gotham is endeavoring to be a virtual Lifeline.  If you have a problem send it to Fredslist or mention it on a group call. We can’t promise that we can solve it, but we will listen and try.

We are a Tribe and collectively we are here for you!

It’s better to give than receive and what goes around comes around!

We are in this together and just have to try to be calm and act prudently to stay safe.

We will see this through!

Yes, we will see this through. And yes, Fred, you are also correct that we ought to stay calm and act prudently and also help others. As far as empty supermarket shelves, the word I am getting from folks nearby is that most supermarkets are almost fully stocked and deliveries continue to arrive. As for me, I have been going to smaller stores (no crowds) and have been able to get everything I need.

Gotham is unique...a supportive “family” whose members, by maintaining the community, wiill help each other through this.

We will survive. We are also lucky to have a group like Gotham to lean on in times of need. We are stronger together, but need to act smartly individually.

I sit on the board of the Safe center LI. Unfortunately times like this can exacerbate issues such as domestic violence etc.
Hoarding of certain products impacts people in ways often not thought about. Organizations like TSCLI have domestic violence shelters, or “safe homes” which literally save peoples’ lives. To ensure that safety the dedicated employees of TSCLI continue to perform their duties at the Safe Homes, keeping the victims and their children safe, providing counseling etc. etc. Unfortunately because of hoarding very critical supplies are simply not to be found, such as gloves, masks disinfectant, paper goods. An urgent call for donations of any of the above has been posted by TSCLI. County officials are trying to help however the paucity of these products has made it almost impossible.

The first sentence of our description of Gotham sums it up. "To forge a virtually cost-free partnership steeped in the spirit of fraternity (or sorority as the case may be) that goes beyond matters of immediate concern." This is the foundation not only of what we are about, but carries a subtext that we will move beyond any immediate concern. Individuals and communities survive only if they believe in and plan for the future. Thanks, Fred for the reminder.

Well said! It’s hard now, but for the greater good. As Cuomo said: “Risk / Reward”

DeBlasio had a good quote the other day "New Yorkers have a tough exterior, however we have hearts of gold." It's nice to see people generally being nice to each other as we go through this together.

Mom texted me that after watching him Tuesday from Delray. I told mom if you watch the day before you'd have said it then!

The only way to get through this is to be kind to one another.

There is a lot of good information shared through Fredslist and I find myself in more frequent contact, albeit electronically, with family, friends and colleagues. Today is the big day. All three in my household now work from home.

That’s never going to be unnatural for you :)
