Please Help Settle This Dispute

This was our very intellectual conversation over dinner Saturday night.

When it comes to soup – do you eat or drink?

My line in the sand has always been tied to the utensil used. If you use a spoon, I say you are eating soup. If the soup is in a mug or a cup, then it is drinking.

Help please. Do you agree with me?  Or do you have some other distinction?

I go with the comparison to cereal, eat. If it involves plain broth, it generally goes in a cup (or mug) for drinking. These days many cups and mugs often serve as bowls with handles so what goes in the "vessel" provides the guide.

Proper nomenclature has always been you eat soap, but Fred being Fred I always drink it. Maybe it’s a Lefty thing :)

Definitely eating soup when using a spoon and drinking soup when ONLY using a mug (and no spoon) - Therefore, only certain soups do not require a spoon :)

Both. It depends upon whom I'm with and whether it is thick or extra stuffed with goodies.
