Should education be free to anyone?

Categories

On the surface it might seem to be an easy answer...however there are always two sides to an issue (and sometimes three:). Following are some points I gleaned from debate.org. school

For:

  • Education is vital and maybe the source for hope in the future
  • Education improves humanity and preserves the planet
  • There is still more technology and discoveries to be made

Against

  • People won't value a free education
  • Free education will cause havoc
  • Who would pay for all the expenses

BTW, Many states already subsidize college and universities for free or with a very low tuition fee.

Commitment to ensuring education must include commitment to ensuring equal education
Kelly Welles

Possibly our greatest shining example of a free higher education are the consistent and staggering outcomes of City College when it was free. The pros far outweigh the cons EXCEPT for the expense voucher which clearly points to higher taxes. Free colleges must still have entrance standards.
Gail Koelln

Most of the "cons" do NOT apply to K through 12 education, which is already free. So, I agree with everyone above. There should definitely at least be a quality, free option to all who want it.

Free or Economically Accessible Education that meets the needs for All is the bridge to a society that can flourish.
Without a commitment to start from pre kindergarten, the road to thrive is a Dead End!

NY is now offering free college tuition. Of course, it comes after my kids graduated. . .

Love the idea of Free education. But who is going to pay for this? Perhaps if there was a way for students that took the free education to give back by working post graduation at a reduced salary to give back to the city in which they got the schooling in.

My client recently came back fro a trip to Egypt and told me that education there is free! I was really surprised that in such a repressive country they have such a "liberal" policy. Apparently they have a huge population with degrees. If Egypt can afford it, shouldn't we?

There has to be a give a take for example if you do Military Service, you then can use your GI Bill to pay for it. There always needs to be a way to pay for everything.

However in general College is way to expensive. It takes most people decades to repay it back.
