Thinking Before You Speak or Type

Categories

My Mom used to say quite often, “Think before you speak.” She would go into further detail with, “Is it necessary?” “Is it kind?”

I’ve been thinking a lot about my Mom’s advice lately. Both for myself and other people. We now live in an age where people share their most private thoughts and words on the internet and social media. Or where we easily communicate through text or email. And it appears that often there is no thought given to the effect one's words may have on other people. As such, I think my Mom’s advice is more important than ever. If my words are not kind and/or necessary, I try not to speak or type them.

What about you? Do you really think before you speak? Or before you type?

or before I click send. Sometimes you compose off line or without a recipient even posted. Whatever it takes to get it right.

I wrote a No Filter blog recently...

Type freely, but know that it’s only a typo until you hit send...

I catch myself sometimes verbally. I think it depends on the audience and how much of filter is on. Typing, always send it yourself 1st and reread it a minute or two later, before re sending to the recipient. Works well me.

So relevant. My mother actually was the ultimate role model for conducting yourself in that manner. Thank you for reminding me Rona

Yes. We say: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Deep breath and pause. This is a great reminder Rona. Thank you. Especially with how charged everything is politically lately and access to social media. It’s amazing to me and I try to tell my kids and students - once it’s out, you can’t EVER take it back, and also, just because you read it on line or see it on TV, doesn’t mean it’s true! Great test to check ourselves- thanks!

I noticed. When my mother in law turned 80 she informed us that she no longer needs to filter herself. It's been quite a ride.

Let's hope we're the same sort of role models for our children.

The younger generation seems to have more trouble with that. They don't get that once it's out there you can't take it back.

I advise my clients to take time before responding to anything. Read the thing to be responded to a second time, later. It usually looks different. Clear emotional charge separately. Reread the answer and let it sit before sending. This way they can keep the balance between being spontaneous and being appropriate.

I delete the recipient until I'm ready to send, to prevent accidental sending

I give my clients similar advice. Sometimes ask them to send to me so I can see it. But some of them can't help themselves. . .
