Waste Not....

I was happy to learn that major hotels chains, including Hyatt, Intercontinental, Hilton and Marriott, are eliminating those little travel size shampoos, conditioners and bath gels within the next few years.

I’ve always wondered about these little amenities. They are convenient, yet wasteful, but no longer tolerable.

Another pet peeve lurks nearby on the hotel bathroom counter — those little bars of soap. For years, I have traveled with a small soap dish and use it to avoid wasting the soap usually left behind.

I was also happy to learn about efforts to collect, sterilize and reconstitute the soap for distribution to under-developed countries where soap is otherwise unavailable.

By the way, the shampoos, conditioners and gels will be available in larger permanent and refillable bottles.

This is another small, yet meaningful, step to combat the waste and environmental impact. Perhaps it is long overdue… but better now than never.

Finally!! I noticed that recently and thought... “finally”!

Hotels are so expensive these days that I gladly pocket the small shampoos and donate to our local Rape Crisis Center or Domestic Violence Shelter. I don't approve of the tiny plastic containers but when you flee from danger you need something unused which is entirely yours.

PS I take anything I have used home with me and continue to use it. Then recyclle as proper. #DoWhatYouCanWhenYouCan

Actually, many hotels in Europe have installed, usually within the shower area, large, refillable or replaceable containers of liquid soap, bath gel, shampoo, and conditioner. I travel often and have noticed this change. Many hotels have also eliminated bathtubs, But this seems to be because people take more showers these days than baths. In keeping with the save water theme, some have installed devices that limit how long one can get water out of the showerhead. Other countries are far more conscious about saving resources than we are in the US.

Many hotels donate the bottles and soaps to shelters and safe homes.

Disney Cruise Line & Hotels started this practice last year. This past weekend when I shopped at Tanger at every store I was asked if needed a bag, that they charge .05 for (more for reusable totes at Disney store). Only had to purchase two; some items I fit in my purse, others in a portable tote that is now always have in my bag & others we just carried to our car. Also being mindful to recycle used plastic bags & packaging at my local supermarket.

Maybe environmentally wasteful, but I donate the small bottles to homeless shelters and half-way houses
