Straws

Do you use straws? Do you like them? Do you care what they are made of?

I ask these questions because I have been encountering a growing opposition to straws. We have actually converted to reusable hard plastic straws.

The "last straw" was when I recently saw a restaurant’s admonition that “we only serve straws upon request”.

But, somehow, it all makes sense to me.

Clever, "last straw". You stir the drink!

I saw a women bring her own straw to a restaurant last week. I don’t use them anymore. Plus, the paper straws fall apart in the drink.

In Florida, many restaurants use paper or have signs saying straws only given on request. I like the "new' paper straws. They hold up for several hours before getting soft. Plastic straws decompose very slowly, if at all, and pose a risk to marine life when dumped on our oceans. Fish that ingest them become our food. I am all for outlawing them myself.

Now if only everyone would become as passionate about other single use plastics. But it's a start!

Don't we remember paper straws, loose in a dispenser or a box, without the sanitary wrapping? Without feeling deprived? The consequence of plastic garbage is horrifying to anyone paying attention. Our inconvenience should be irrelevant.

I have also seen stainless steel straws that fold with a cleaning gadget that you can put in a tube that closes. Another thing to keep in my pocketbook, I guess....Hope it can go in the dishwasher...
