Summertime Commuting

Categories
Lifestyle

Like the song says, It’s Summertime and the living is easy.

You could alter the words a bit and say It's Summertime and the commuting is easy, as once school ends for the Summer and people migrate to the beaches, my daily drive from Nassau County to Long Island City becomes far easier and quicker (as much as a half hour each way).

In a way it is a vacation in itself from icy congested roads.  Even the subway cars are looser.

I tell myself to enjoy it while I can.  Labor Day is looming!

I have noticed my commute from western Long Island (Lynbrook) to eastern (Commack) is about the same this year. In past years it was easily 20 minutes faster during the summer. Not sure why, but there is plenty of traffic on the Southern Stste.

Getting around the city, mostly by walking, seems to be more difficult than usual for summer months. The number of people doesn't seem to have decreased at all.

I can get to Center City in 25 minutes right now!!! Normally it’s 2 hours :)

Weekends on the UWS of Manhattan are almost too quiet on the weekends.

Now that you mention it - my drive from the city to Brooklyn has been so quick. I thought I was just lucky. But I guess it's the Summer

I love driving to work during the summer, much less congested. I also don't mind working Fridays in the summer. I get so much done because the phones are so quiet..

Not much to contribute from the land of the endless summer . I got out early on . Congestion is my enemy . So I won’t go into my “ choices “ speech . I miss Long Island summers . The fireflies and the sounds of lawnmowers in the distance . I grew up a quarter of a mile from what now is the L.I.E. . It used to be thick Woods . I could walk across Powerhouse Road and play in the Woods with my dog . When the expressway was being built I was maybe 10 years old in 1954 . I think I knew then . I gotta get out of this place if it’s the last thing I ever do . Eric Burdon was right . But I digress . Long Island summers will always be the best . The congestion not so much . But praise be when the traffic is light . When the Cross Bronx is empty . When The Belt is moving at the limit and the Cross Island is flowing like butter . Clams on the half shell. Nathan’s fries, Carvel . Traffic ? Not so much . 4 games in the Bronx this weekend . Crucial . Lox, herring and bagels Fedexed from Russ and Daughters . Crucial .
