When I see the planes following each other, I think of it as a highway in the sky

When I see a plane, or planes, I wonder where they are going and what the people on them have planned at their destinations. That wasn't the case when I travelled, way too much, for business. Now that my plane travel is vacation related, I think of the fun those passengers are going to have.

When I was a teen we used to go to the airport in Detroit to watch the planes come and go. And later, as an "adult" living in DC, we used to fo the same. We were so close it seems like we could almost reach up and touch the planes at National. I don't think planes don't fly over NYC, I only notice them when I am traveling. You like to keep time measurements. Interesting.

Imagine what the Air Traffic Controllers must have to do to manage all of that air traffic! Oye!

At the busiest time - you can see six planes in the sky at once heading to JFK.
Usually over the water but every once in a while the flight patterns are changed and then you notice the planes - at least for a while

I know some find it annoying, but I always felt it was strangely comforting. Evidence of humanity. Lol. I felt the same way when we could hear the train whistle faintly from the village in our old house.

I remember my then girlfriend, now wife, going to the roof of the Pan Am Building, at JFK, to watch the Concorde - what a beautiful plane! Those were the pre-terroism days, when one could travel around the airport without a problem.

When I’m at the beach in I see them stacked up sometimes 7 at a time waiting to land at JFK. I like it - it’s like they’re in competition with the stars

Living in Lynbrook on the north side of Sunrise for over 14 years, we have never experienced the flights until about six months ago. Apparently the flight patterns changed leaving from JFK and we are now barraged with somewhat low flying planes every hour or so. If it is foggy or raining, they fly even lower. I miss the quiet we once had, but you do get used to it I guess.

I'm like Liz. I like to look up and imagine where the planes are going. I have also had the fun of literally flying over my neighborhood while landing in JFK. That was pretty cool. Even for nervous flyer like me.

Indulge the tutorial . The surface wind at any airport determines the duty runway and hence the approach and arrival phase . Runways are numbered by their compass direction . Hence runway 22 is heading 220 degrees on the compass or south southwest .Doesnt matter where the aircraft is coming from .Its sequenced early on to fit into the arrival flow at a given airport according to the duty runway / wind direction . Fred is seeing arrivals to runway 22R at JFK . Daniel could be seeing departures off of Runway 13R at JFK headed south south east over the south shore of Long Island .All depends on wind direction .From Jane’s roof its probably traffic to or from LGA . At JFK it’s four 12-13 thousand foot strips of concrete . Pointing towards the compass heading and or it’s reciprocal. I.E. runway 22 ‘s reciprocal is Runway 4 . Same strip of pavement. New York Terminal Airspace is divided into many sectors with dozens of arrival routes for JFK,LGA and EWR . Imagine the complexity . Those that “ Push Tin “ so to speak have their hands full . But Mother Nature calls the shots as always .

I actually rarely notice, when I do I wonder where they are going and wish then a safe trip. SO much going on --- between Glen Cove Rd traffic which is now audible from so many locations to more air traffic, we are often yelling to be heard when outside.

Closer to the airports a lot of angst exist and efforts to address noise get priority. Also recall that one of the conditions of the building of the USTA in Flushing Meadows Corona Park included no flyovers during the US Open matches.
