Those of us with professional licenses have something in common, registration and continuing education requirements. Attorneys are required to reregister every two years and have completed twenty-four credits of continuing education, during the two year period. My husband, a chiropractor, has to reregister every three years and complete thirty-six hours of continuing education.

I have habitually completed my continuing education in the same way, taking a 6 or 7 credit class every fall and another every spring. There is a professional lecturer who lectures exclusively to Family Law attorneys and I always attend his classes. I actually enjoy continuing education and don’t mind the casual day away from the office.

This year I had to miss the fall class due to a scheduled trial, but I was certain I had made up the credits. As my registration is due this month I recently added up my credits and I was shocked to see I had only twenty-three; I was one credit short. I scrambled to find, and complete, a one credit online class.

The change to my routine troubled me to the point wherein I already looked up the date of the fall class so I don’t miss it this year. How do you complete your continuing education requirements?

Much of it through the Garibaldi Attorney Round Table.

I go to professional conferences in my niche area (ADR) and get gobs of CLE (Continuing Legal Education) and ACE (Arbitrator Continuing Education) credits; I teach & train for the NY State Bar Association (typically receiving triple credits for each hour of teaching); and I occasionally write for State Bar publications thereby also earning credits. I usually end up with large excesses, indeed multiples of the credits needed, but I'm not doing it for the credits (they're just a nice by-product).

CLE is something that is never a concern. I generally total close to 100 for the timeframe. As a Village Justice I must take mandatory CJE annually which points get added into my CLE totals. I belong to the Theodore Roosevelt American Inn of Court which alone provides the requisite amount through the pupillage programs we attend. As David, I frequently am part of panels in CLE programs on ADR and Real Estate as lecturer and moderator and lastly I attend the ADR programs and conferences for NYS Dispute Resolution Section.

I used to teach some so I got both credit and marketing. Lol. Or on line video programs.

So especially for you Rona. Airline pilots go through rigorous 3 day simulator sessions twice a year . It’s all very real. Motion and visual state of the art virtual reality simulators . Engine failures , explosions , thunderstorms . Everything bad that they can think of . Plus a rigorous physical twice a year with a mental evaluation. Random drug testing . And a quarterly written exam with a zero tolerance for error . We call it “ You bet your job ! “ All that and a semi- annual line check . Being observed on the flight deck on a revenue leg . It’s a stressful environment purposely made so to allow the management pilot a chance to see the pilot under an abnormal workload . The part I liked the best was a 15 minute period after you passed the ride where you could push the simulator beyond the envelope . Roll it on its back or buzz some warships off the Korean Peninsula . Get the juices flowing . Good stuff.

Actually I do so much speaking that I end up with most of my credits through those presentations. I had to take the diverstiy credit this year though and frankly, that was interesting. And of course, I'm always following those ethics credits to make sure they add up.
