Memories

Have you ever noticed that two people present at the same event oft times have different memories?

I had that experience last week when I had dinner with a high school friend who, unbeknownst to me, is a reader of my Friday With Fred Blog.

The first word out of his mouth was Zelig.  I took the bait and said I’m like Zelig and have been witness to many interesting events. He responded that "The (1960) Patterson/Johansson fight was at the Polo Grounds, not Yankee Stadium."

Rashomon!

PS: He did confirm that while leaving the Polo Grounds Liz did respond with an ugly gesture towards us with her middle finger after we taunted her with shouts of “Debbie, Debbie!”

Not unusual at all. And one of the memories is usually right about half the time.

Patterson won back his title in their second fight in June of 1960 at the Polo Gounds . The first fight was at Yankee Stadium a year earlier .,The Rabbit got his bell rung and was out for 10 minutes or so . The third fight in which Patterson retained his title was in Miami at the Convention Center . I watched all three . I was fifteen for fight number one and remember thinking HOLY SHIT ! The thundering left by Ingemar came out of nowhere . Floyd went down like he was hit with a sledge hammer . Which he was .
That being said ..... I notice Diane often remembers things mutually shared completely different than I ! Coyotes have been harassing our livestock . Wasn’t that you Diane sitting in the Bay tree with the Mossberg Pump. I noticed some Double 0 buckshot loads missing from my night table drawer along with my NVG’s ( night vision goggles). Ah yeah well ... that’s what ya get when you marry Annie Oakley . Leaving the bed at 2 AM . Trekking into the corral with revenge on her mind . That’s what we have big dogs for isn’t it ? I rolled over and figured the shot gun blast would wake me . Learned years ago to let her be when she’s on a killing spree . In her defense they grabbed a few of her prized hens . And worse a broody with 5 baby chicks under her . Bad time to ask if she bought any bacon yesterday . Wait ! Was I dreaming ? Diane says she has no memory of last night’s Tom Foolery . No carcasses to show for it . Tonight she’ll sit out there and watch the bats come and go .

I just saw a great Annie Oakley bio.

I find that, generally, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
