. . . just one piece of networking advice, what would it be?


Do you ever think about that question? I do.


We have all been doing this thing called networking for a while and in my opinion, its kind of personal. We all approach networking from our own perspectives and bring to the process our own special twist. But if you had to break it down to one piece of critical advice, what direction would you take?


For me, I think it boils down to that question we ask at every Gotham table – how can we help you? The best networking happens when people genuinely want to help each other. That is the essence of what goes around comes around.

Follow up! Not sure why I am still surprised when people don't follow up or respond to a new connection. When I go to an event and meet someone new I always follow up with a request to connect again in person or on the phone. Why else go and meet new people? It is during the follow up that we not only can ask "how can I help," the needs are fleshed out. And not responding to a follow up is rude and completely non-Gothamish.

As I say in my book on networking, make networking a habit 15 minutes a day so you have the time to think about others, follow up. Keep yourself focused on your own goals so you don't waste time running down dead ends. Remember please and thank you.

Be interested and then show that you are interesting!
I agree with Daniel and Victoria.
Learn about the other person first and ask questions and repeat what they say so they know you've listened well.
If the other person does the same when it is your turn, then you know follow up will be very welcome and positive.
