Text Stops

There is a new peril among pedestrians. I am sure that we’ve all fallen victim — hopefully without dire consequences.
I was reminded of it just the other day as I was walking to the subway. I was about to step onto the first step of the stairs down to the subway when I bumped into the young woman in front of me who had stopped abruptly. After a moment, she proceeded. I noticed her smartphone and realized that she was texting. That explained her sudden stop.
Perhaps an explanation but not an excuse.
I have been the victim of text stops in the street, in stairways, on subway platforms... and that’s only what I recall.
Sometimes it’s more than an annoyance. It’s dangerous.

Learning to use valuable tools takes time. I can certainly be more conscious.

I don’t text when crossing streets. Does that help?

That more people aren't killed as a result of their total lack of regard for their surroundings while they are glued to their phones is a miracle, or maybe there is a knack or learned ability to multitask texting and walking safely. As a Village Judge the number of use of cellular device violations before me are increasing rather than decreasing. Real life interactions really are lovely as those who attend Gotham meetings can attest to, yet so many people seem glued to their smart phones rather than actually putting them down and looking at the people and places around them.

I had a texter run straight into me from behind sending met forward on to the pavement on the sidewalk. I Bruised and bloodied he didn't even bother to stop you just continued going right down the road. At that moment I was all for Banning them entirely. But people do have to be more careful.
