I Object

I read an announcement yesterday that my gym decided to remove cable news from the viewing choices. The theory is that the news stations contain negative content, contrary to a healthy way of life. Those are not my words.

Simply, I object. Cable news is often my draw at the gym. I switch back and forth between stations, taking in contrary interpretations of current events, but multi-tasking as I wind my way through my workout. It is good for burning calories.

There is no grey in this for me. I choose to go the gym — I should be able to choose what I watch during my workout.

Do you watch news programs while you are working out?

An appropriate reaction!

If you have Wifi there perhaps deploy your iPad. I use it frequently for viewing and sometimes audio when TV set not available.

I actually stay away from the news while working out and tend to watch mindless programming, i.e my Real Housewives. I find that it tends to help the time go by.

I don't watch anything. I focus on what I'm doing and let my thoughts flow. One of the great benefits to exercise is relieving stress, watching the news isn't going to do that for me. If I really can't stand the quiet of being with my own thoughts, music or audiobooks are preferable to TV.

I listen to books on tape on my iphone with blue tooth earbuds so there are no wires interfering.

I object to the censorship but thinking about healthy lifestyle, the news is certainly contraindicated!
Stream classical music and watch your blood pressure plunge, even as you workout!!

Yes you choose to go to A gym. So you can also choose to go to another.

I keep promising myself that I will start exercising, and if I do I don't know if I would be better off or not watching the news---however if your choice of viewing at the gym is for your eyes only the gym should not be allowed to dictate what you can or cannot watch. If it is viewed by others then the question raised is different.

Can you watch on your phone or tablet? That's what my kids do.

I don't watch the news while at the gym. If I'm walking on the treadmill I read and if I'm on the elliptical, I either watch something that doesn't require a lot of attention or listen to music. I'm thinking about getting audio books for the elliptical.

I listen to music when I exercise at home or go for a walk. No gym for me. However, you should be able to watch the news at the gym! After all you are a paying customer!

As I don't go to a gym (but should), my opinion may be moot, but I agree with Cayce in that watching news (or any TV) is not the best thing to be doing while working out. Good music (to you) or quiet time to let your mind wander was my preference when I used to work out at home.
